In modern times Skinwalkers have been described as grotesque demon-like creatures that range from something paranormal to aliens from visiting planets. The Skinwalker sightings have often been proceeded or followed by dead livestock, strange lights or UFO's. Most notably these events have occurred on a ranch in Utah which was recently called the Skinwalker ranch. Now I know that Skinwalker Ranch sounds like some combination of a wild west excursion and nudist colony, but to my surprise it has nothing to do with that. Many famous paranormal researchers and other programs have done features on this location.
Here is an excerpt about it from Rense.com :
"With skinwalkers becoming the subjects of popular books and recently, movies, it is fair to ask about their origins. In August 1996, a team of scientists arrived on a remote ranch in NE Utah to investigate a bizarre litany of phenomena; including unidentified flying objects, animal mutilations, paranormal and poltergeist occurrences that appeared to erupt almost on a nightly basis. The list went on and on. The first piece of information the team learned from local people was that the ranch lay "on the path of the skinwalker". Was the skinwalker responsible for the weird happenings on this ranch? What followed was a multi-year odyssey into the dark unknown as the science team tried to pursue, measure and photograph the elusive "skinwalker". The complete account of the unprecedented research project is published in the book "Hunt for the Skinwalker".
Come to find out the area had a significant Navajo history, which included cave paintings and other evidence of the Skinwalker. Then this photo that went viral was supposedly taken of a Skinwalker crossing a road:
So the picture was a hoax, but how do you explain the mutilated livestock, the strange sightings and all of the other Phenomena? Once again I think this is a case of mass suggestion. people go to this place and really want to see something. The animal deaths could have been committed by some sadistic asswipe who hates cows.
This story is interesting because it combines Native American folklore, UFO's, aliens, Ghosts, Psychic Phenomena, maybe a cryptid, basically it has everything.
