Most of you dedicated readers know that in addition to my books and stories I am also the co-host of the variety podcast "The Megapods." Recently we conducted an interview for our next episode of UFO expert Nick Pope. Nick use to be the British Government's UFO expert for the Ministry of Defense. While Nick spoke to us about a variety of cool topics the one that stuck with me the most was his investigation into the Rendlesham Forest UFO Encounter. I am very curious to know what you guys think of the incident and what your own theories are about what exactly happened on those cold December nights in 1980.
Rendlesham forest is in Suffolk, England and the forest borders RAF Woodbridge. RAF Woodbridge is basically an Air force base that was being used by the United States at the time. The Cold War was in full swing and the base housed a significant armament of nuclear weapons. The first event occurred on December 26th at around 3am in the morning, colored lights in the air were reported by a pair of serviceman on their regular patrol. The lights appeared to be descending into the forest. Lieutenant Col. Charles Halt documented the case as he led the investigation. Here is his report of what happened that night from Wiki:
"Strange lights were reported by a security patrol near the East Gate of RAF Woodbridge apparently descending into nearby Rendlesham Forest. Servicemen initially thought it was a downed aircraft but, upon entering the forest to investigate they saw, according to Halt's memo, a strange glowing object, metallic in appearance, with coloured lights. As they approached, it moved through the trees, and "the animals on a nearby farm went into a frenzy" (but see below). The craft left three impressions or depressions in the ground that were visible the next day. One of the servicemen, Sgt. Jim Penniston, later claimed to have encountered a "craft of unknown origin" and to have made detailed notes of its features, touched its "warm" surface, and copied the numerous symbols on its body.[9] The object allegedly flew away after their brief encounter. Penniston also claimed to have seen triangular landing gear on the object. While undergoing regression hypnosis in 1994 Penniston subsequently claimed that the "craft" he encountered had come from our future, and was occupied by time travellers, not extraterrestrials.[10] Sgt. Penniston's report made shortly after the incident contains no mention of physically encountering an unknown craft, nor of interacting with it. This report and associated sketches are neither signed nor dated, nor are they representative of AF Form 1169, Statement of Witness."
Later that night local authorities were called in, but they only reported seeing the light from a nearby lighthouse. The next morning a group of servicemen returned to a small clearing where they had information that the craft had landed. At the location they found three impressions in the ground, the impressions were circular and equidistantly apart in the shape of a triangle. This was speculated to have been made when the landing gear of the craft touched down. There were also burn marks and broken branches reported on overhanging tree limbs. Plaster casts of the imprints were made for later comparison and research.

Radiation detectors were used to scan the are where the impressions in the ground were made. They found traces of radiation in the impressions and on a tree nearby. During this time a flashing light was seen across the field near a farm that was in the direct line of sight. More events took place later that night when bright star like objects were witnessed shining a beam of light down into the forest.
So what exactly happened on those frosty December nights? Nick Pope has investigated hundreds if not thousands of sightings, reports and has spoken to countless eye-witnesses over the years while working for the Ministry of Defense. He maintains that this incident was one of the most compelling and that to this day it can't be explained away. You can hear the entire Nick Pope interview at TheMegapods.com when it is released later this week.
In my opinion there are only a couple of possible explanations: Either the Americans were testing a secret spy probe/satellite or the Russians were (it was the height of the cold war) and the evidence was cleaned up quickly and then subsequently covered up. The other explanation is the more sensational... EXTRATERRESTRIALS.
What do you guys think?
