So now that the A to Z blog challenge is over I will be back on my regular blogging schedule and that also means some more guest blogs. I really hope that everyone who reads my blog supports indie and self-published authors. There are some really talented writers out there who are putting out great stuff and are fighting tooth and nail just to let people know that they exist. In the last couple of days I've watched two more movies off of Netflix that I would like to review for you. The first one is the movie "Odd Thomas" which is based on a Dean Koontz novel. I had heard about this movie during it's theatrical release and when it showed up on Netflix I just had to bite. The story is about a short order cook who can see dead people and through getting rid of bad guys he can help them cross over to heaven. It's not an awful story, but it does seem familiar.
The movie has decent effects and Odd Thomas's girlfriend is really hot especially in the boy-shorts "camel toe" scene. There are some nice twists and turns, but I just can't get past the first person style where the main character narrates throughout the film. This is typical of YA books and often times movies that want to target that audience. Another thing that kind of got to me was the big reveal. The revelation of who the bad guys were was a nice touch, but the part with the girlfriend I saw coming. The movie in itself is kind of a series of the same things over and over. So in the end while it was plenty entertaining and if you have an afternoon to watch a movie you could do worse, I can't give it a full recommendation.

The next movie I watched was a sci-fi/horror called "The Last Days on Mars" starring Liev Schreiber. The story begins with a small group of astronauts prospecting on Mars. They eventually find out through a series of incidents that they have identified an alien bacteria. The bacteria of course gets spread to the crew and would-n-cha-know-it they turn into blood thirsty, zombie type things. The alien zombies look pretty cool and there's some nice gore involved. The story kind of peters out though and it becomes kind of a low rent version of 28 Days later in space. I liked a lot about this movie, but again it seemed like we'd seen this story or variations of it before.

I'm not sure about the Mars scenery, it kind of looks like it was just filmed in the desert. Maybe that's really what Mars looks like. I would recommend this movie simply because we don't see many good, straight sci-fi horrors that aren't named Aliens or Prometheus.
