Today I want to talk about some of the hidden gems on Netflix. Netflix has become known for really really bad horror and sci-fi movies, but there are actually a few movies worth watching that you might not have found without Netflix.
The first movie that I highly recommend is a lower budget sci-fi movie called “Primer.” the movie is about four friends who are entrepreneurs. They create a new invention that happens to be a time machine. I guess that’s the best description of the device. It reminds me a little bit of the “Groundhogs Day” premice. What if you could go back and correct your mistakes. The movie is very well done for the budget.
The second movie that I’d like to draw your attention to is the Dystopian, futuristic movie “Dredd” this movie could never be confused with the Sylvester Stallone schlockfest that uses the same character “Judge Dredd.” The lower budget version starring Karl Urban is actually really cool and better than the Hollywood mega-disaster with Stallone. It’s violent, dark and gritty. Society has basically collapsed and these super cops have become the judge, jury and executioner. Urban’s character (one of these motorcycle riding lawmen) gets trapped in a high rise that is controlled by criminals. he has to fight his way out and there are many twists and turns. You should really check this one out, keep in mind it's brutal.
The last movie that I will recommend from Netflix; is a British zombie flick called “Cockneys vs. Zombies.” Most horror movies on Netflix are like watching porn without the sex, the acting is bad, the special effects suck and the production is like a home movie. This movie is low budget, and intentionally cheeky, but it's the cream of the low budget crop. There are parts that are so bad that they’re good and most of all the movie is fun. We’ve all seen zombie movies that don’t take themselves too seriously like “Shaun of the Dead” and I think this movie is a lower rent version of that with some originality thrown in.
So anyway, that’s my “N” post for the A to Z challenge.
