The Long Island Serial Killer, otherwise known as the Gilgo Killer or the Seashore Serial Killer has been hunting sex trade workers in the NYC and Long Island areas for at least the last ten years. Bodies have been found between Suffolk County and Jones Beach.
Four bodies were found to be strangled and placed in burlap sacks. Which indicate a connection between murders. Many other sets of skeletal remains have been found in the same areas since 2010. So far 10 sets of remains have been found in the Gilgo Beach area. Police believe all remains may have been discarded by the same killer.
The identity of the killer is unknown, but speculation continues that the killer is a member of the law enforcement community.
Here is the news release of the case that opened the whole carms that lead to the discovery of all of the bodies:
A woman called nine-one-one and said that she was in danger, many missteps were made during that call which cost precious time in the investigation. The woman’s corpse was found a year and a half later.
"Gilbert’s call was directed to the New York State Police because Gilbert was panicked and couldn't tell police exactly where she was. It took a month before her call was tied to a missing persons report filed by her family in New Jersey, where she lived, and in that time evidence was lost. Moriarty also talks with a man who has inserted himself into the police investigation. Gilbert, an online escort, went missing in May 2010. Her skeletal remains were found in a Long Island marsh in December 2011, and her clothes were found a quarter of a mile away. The search for Gilbert led to police finding a serial killer’s graveyard . . .”
So one of the reasons I picked the Long Island Serial Killer is that it’s still an active case. It’s also in my neck of the woods so we see news reports on the murders from time to time.
Horror Question of the Day: What’s more frightening to you a serial killer still on the loose or the ones that are locked up and you hear about all the grisly details?
